* EC: Clarifications and Expectations: Turning to plan B-Interim life safety measures offer fire protection during construction or deficiencies (Guest Columnist: Anne M. Guglielmo, CFPS, CHFM, CHSP, LEED A.P., engineer, The Joint Commission) (PDF/QV)[REF: EC] EC News, February 2016, Vol 19, #1, Pg 7 JCe1602_B6
In this article, guest columnist Anne Guglielmo, a TJC engineer clarifies and provides suggestions for improved compliance with the 14 elements of performance in LS.01.02.01. To that end, she groups and then explicates them in a non-sequential manner in order to enhance understanding as follows:
- EP3: Make sure there you have a written ILSM policy as required. A key point here is that it is important to define “immediately correctable”[KeyDef]. Another is that the policy should “clearly refer to the assessment process, and the associated documentation regarding if an ILSM is needed.“
- EP10-11: Make sure staff in an ILSM area know how to use relevant, new or recently added fire fighting equipment
- EP5-7: Make sure the right ILSM equipment is not only in place, but in the right place and properly installed
- EP4,8-9: Make sure housekeeping, storage and debris removal in an ISLM area are performed in accordance with the ILSM policy (that should address these issues)
- EP12: Make sure fire safety equipment and any temporary alarm/detection systems are checked monthly and have documented testing records
- EP13-14: Make sure all staff and relevant contractors are aware of the ILSM condition and their appropriate roles/responsibilities.
- EP1-2: Make sure a fire watch is put into effect any time the fire alarm or automatic suppression system is compromised for 4 hours during a 24-hour period.
