Barbara Pankoski, CHFM, CHSP-FSM, Senior Life Safety Consultant of Healthcare Compliance Team, LLC often finds inaccurate and/or incomplete life safety drawings when conducting her mock survey building tours. She agrees that the status of your life safety drawings makes a significant contribution to a surveyor’s first impression. As part of her recommendations, she frequently refers her clients to a classic TJC article from the Clarifications and Expectations column of EC News entitled Super Suites: Special space designation presents fire safety advantages for health care organizations. On page 7, the past page of this article is a useful sidebar, “What to Include in Life Safety Code Drawings”. On the same page, the author makes a concluding statement that confirms Ms. Pankoski experience. He states, “In 2011, 52% of all Joint Commission–accredited hospitals had findings at Standard LS.01.01.01, Element of Performance 2, because of inaccurate Life Safety Code drawings, including the boundaries and suite sizes. The Life Safety Code drawings must clearly display certain information, as shown in (the sidebar) What to Include in Life Safety Code Drawings…” – Environment of Care® News, October 2012, Volume 15, Issue 10, pgs 6-7 or Perspectives, Volume 32, Number 10, October 2012 , pg 11 (PDF)
