This article announces the publication of a Viewpoint on physician leadership of improvement efforts entitled, Aiming Higher to Enhance Professionalism: Beyond Accreditation and Certification.  It is found in the May issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The basic (view) point of the article/authors (Drs. Mark Chassin and David Baker) is that physicians and medical societies need to not only adapt, but become leaders in the movement of health care toward high reliability.  As further motivation, they suggest this may be necessary to prevent the threat of government agencies and others taking away the current physician privilege of self-governance.
Tip: If it does not already have one, encourage your medical staff to start a Journal Club. Suggest the Chassin/Baker viewpoint as the next reading for discussion in the club portion of a medical staff meeting. The road to high reliability will require medical staff champions.
