*TS: Tracer Methodology 101: Medication Storage in Hospitals[®] [REF: Phrm, P&T, PI, Sft] The Source, July 2014, Vol 12, #7, Pg 4 JCs1407_B4
Although not in the top 10 for our psychiatric hospitals, more than a third of TJC hospitals were cited on this standard in 2013. The content of this article focused largely on issues related to:
- Security: The right balance between limited access for security and timely access for patient care.
- Integrity: Awareness that expiration dates might need to change for medications stored out of their appropriate temperature ranges and that refrigerator temperatures should not just be monitored, but also used to trigger improvements as needed.
This month’s scenario included 7 sample questions that ranged across standards MM.01.01.03, MM.03.01.01, and MM.05.01.01. As always, a tracer worksheet is provided.
Tip: There have now been 6 articles in the Tracer Methodology 101 series dedicated to medication management. Since every survey includes a Medication Management System Tracer, your P&T committee should familiarize itself with the sample questions from these articles. See the comments section of this article for the full listing of the other 5 articles.
