• EC: Labeling the Hazard: OSHA to institute “global harmonization” of hazard communications[®] [REF: E&M, JCSC, SFT, StEd] EC News July 2013, Vol 16, #7, Pg 1 OSHA will soon be requiring a new labeling system for hazardous chemical containers based on the use of a Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of internationally standardized pictograms. Safety data sheets (SDS), formerly known as Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS ) will also change to a new standardized look and be re-structured into a 16-section format. The deadline for updating of labels is June 1, 2015, but training of workers is to be accomplished by December 1, 2013. A sidebar on page 4 (that appears to be based on OSHA Fact Sheet #3642) outlines the minimum required topics for the training. Since EP 11 of EC.02.01.01 requires having safety data sheets and EP 12 requires labeling of hazardous materials and wastes, these training requirements apply to our hospitals as well.
