[Index] [Blog] The Source [TS] (June Vol 11 #6) • TS: Perspectives on Patient Safety: AHRQ Reports on Top Patient Safety Strategies [FYI: IC, MD, RN, SFT] The Source, June 2013, Vol 11, # 6, Pg 11 The US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has published a report (Making Health Care Safer II: An Updated Critical Analysis of the Evidence for Patient Safety Practices) that identifies and strongly recommends 10 patient safety strategies that can “vastly improve patient safety and health care…”. The following are the most relevant to psychiatric hospitals: • TS: Benchmark: Effective Data Collection and Analysis: Complying with Standard PI.02.01.01 [FYI: IT, JCSC, LDR, PI] The Source, June 2013, Vol 11, # 6, Pg 16 PI.02.01.01 requires organizations to compile and analyze data in usable formats, using statistical tools and techniques, and compare data with external sources when available. Here the authors suggest ensuring compliance by paying attention to five data management subsystems, 1- Collecting, 2- Cleansing (checked for accuracy), 3- Reporting, 4- Analyzing and 5- Applying data. Most of the article focuses on the role and methods of ORYX vendors and TJC in addressing the five sub-systems. A useful tip is for those with EMR to explore the possibility of creating an electronic interface with your vendor that would permit direct data capture/transfer. Although time consuming (and perhaps expensive) on the front end, the long-term efficiency benefits could be very worthwhile; especially if established for an entire hospital system. The article also recommends the use of TJC’s Core Measure Solution Exchange.
