[Index] [Blog] Environment of Care News [EC] (February Vol 16 #2) • EC: Weathering the Storm What hospitals can learn from Hurricane Sandy [FYI: EOC, JCSC, LDR, SFT] EC News February 2013, Vol 16, # 2, Pg 1 In this article, TJC picks up from where it left off in last month’s EC News article; Turn to The Joint Commission when disasters like Superstorm Sandy loom. This time the focus is on lessons learned from the experience of New York hospitals with the hurricane. Of course, the importance of complying with TJC emergency management standards and conducting rigorous disaster drills is encouraged. The take home points of emphasis, however, seemed to be an underscoring of the need to strengthen infrastructure (especially emergency power capabilities) and preparedness/effectiveness of contingency and evacuation measures. Hurricane Sandy is seen as a cautionary tale for the likelihood of the latter. Make sure your Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) includes an evacuation strategy and that you periodically rehearse it.
