The National Center for Injury Prevention and Control reports that 25% of women, 14% of men and an unknown but apparently growing percentage of elders have been victims of extreme violence or abuse.  Hospital staff can help with needed identification and reporting of such abuse. Assessing for abuse and/or neglect is a requirement of PC.01.02.09.  However, just asking questions about this issue can be disturbing for patients/families and uncomfortable for staff. Two of five recommended strategies for complying with this standard are:
1 – Provide education and training for staff – to emphasize the treatment and  safety importance of identification/reporting as well as ensuring staff awareness of your state’s reporting requirements
2 – Develop scripts – to guide and help ensure consistent appropriateness in the questioning process
