*TS: Emerging Threats: Preparing for Infectious Disease Outbreaks (PDF/QV) [REF: IC] The Source, February 2015, Vol 13, #2, Pg 1 JCs1502_B2
Although there have only been 2 deaths so far in the US from Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), the threat appears to have revealed weaknesses in the IC processes of many hospitals. For example, staff may not have ability to properly put on and take off protective personal equipment (PPS). This article outlines and describes steps for:
• performing an EVD risk assessment (IC.01.03.01)
• setting goals for reducing the risk of EVD transmission (IC.01.04.01)
• incorporating EVD preparedness into an IC Plan (IC.01.05.01)
• Preparing for an influx of EVD (IC.01.06.01)
• Implementing an EVD plan (IC.02.01.01)
• Preventing EVD transmission (IC.02.03.01)
• Evaluating the EVD plan (IC.03.01.01, EM.03.01.03)
A sidebar on page 6 identifies 10 potentially relevant standards (8 IC and 2 EM standards) and a link is provided to a CDC listing of Ebola treatment centers.
Tip: When new threats such as EVD arise, organizations would be wise to assess their risk. In this case, consider factors such as proximity to international airports and the likelihood of west african peoples in/coming to your service area. If that risk seems significant, continue the suggested steps to update your IC plan accordingly.
Tip: At the very least, assure staff competence with PPE and identify the nearest EVD treatment center
