The Questions
How well do you really know the standards? Take this short quiz to refresh your memory, test your knowledge, and/or educate your staff about the Environment of Care, Emergency Management, and Life Safety standards and other essential accreditation information. Use the quiz to help brush up on key topics or even to prepare for the Certified Joint Commission Professional® (CJCP®) exam.* Turn to page 11 for the answers, if you don’t already know them.

* In January 2013, Joint Commission Resources (JCR) launched its credential for accreditation professionals—Certified Joint Commission Professional® (CJCP®). Each month, this column features a sample question similar to those that appear on the examination. Please note that the sample questions are NOT actual examination questions. STANDARDS
The Answers
Here are the answers to the questions on page 2. How did you do?
A, all doors serving the stairway must close. Organizations can choose to hold stairway doors open with automatic release devices—such as magnetic sensors—as long as these devices connect to the fire alarm system. When any device activates
the fire alarm system, all doors in the stair enclosure must close automatically to prevent the spread of fire.

B, medical equipment, and utilities. To ensure a well- functioning environment, organizations must have high-level, written management plans that guide operations in the following areas: safety, security, hazardous material, fire, medical equipment, and utilities. These plans should provide an
operational roadmap that anyone can read to get a sense of how the organization manages its environment of care. The ultimate purpose of the plans is to minimize risk and ensure effective performance.

Erratum
In the March issue of EC News, page 2, question 3, answer C in the “Test Your Standards IQ” should read 32 gallons, not 132 gallons. We apologize for any confusion.
B, [every] 36 months. Hospitals that use an emergency generator to provide power to areas in which a loss of power could result in patient harm—including operating rooms, recovery rooms, obstetrical delivery rooms, nurseries, and urgent care areas—must test their emergency generator for a minimum of 4 continuous hours every 36 months. Hospitals should make sure to document test completion dates.
STANDARDS REFERENCE: EC.02.05.07, EP 7
C, [more than] 4 hours in a 24-hour period. A fire watch involves contacting the local fire authority and regularly patrolling the area where a fire alarm or sprinkler is out of service. Although organizations can begin conducting a fire watch at any time, they are required to conduct one when the fire alarm or sprinkler is out for more than 4 hours in a 24-hour period in an occupied building. Fire watch times must be documented.
STANDARDS REFERENCE: LS.01.02.01, EP 1
C, only during the community portion of an escalating event exercise. Although they are useful, tabletop drills are not meant
to fully test all aspects of an organization’s Emergency Operations Plan. In fact, the only time in which an organization can use
a tabletop drill and remain in compliance is when it is testing the community portion of an escalating exercise in which the community is unable to support the health care organization.
